Not all Mother in Laws are Monsters

This thanksgiving was even more special than usual. Not only was my entire family home for the holiday and sat together at the table enjoying our turkey, but my mother in law was a part of our day as well. I have to say even though she does not live in the same city as I do, every time she visits it’s like I have known her for years. I hear monster in law stories from friends all the time, I have been married before, and well yeah, I had a monster in law then. Luckily, this time around it’s totally different.

My husband didn’t grow up in a close family as I did, so he’s had to learn how we celebrate birthdays and holidays, I have to admit, we do things a bit extreme sometimes, but it does make for some awesome memories, and I am so glad he enjoys himself. Because my family and I have shown him the ropes on how we do things, I wanted to make sure we do the same for my mother in law. Now that I am self employed, I have more free time on my hands to do so. As soon as we bought her plane ticket, the planning was on. Since my husband had to work when her flight came in, I picked her up from the airport. A friend had asked me if I was nervous or scared to be alone with. Honestly, I wasn’t or never am. Maybe it’s because I am such a people person or because I feel totally comfortable around her, probably both. If I can handle someone like my ex monster in law, I can handle the devil himself. haha My mother in law is always very nice, sweet, and respectful towards me. I got lucky.

I treated her to lunch on the Riverwalk (San Antonio, Tx), it was like I saw her the day before. We chatted and enjoyed the good food and lovely view. I knew that at home feeling was a great start to a good holiday weekend with her. After that we relaxed at my house till the husband came home from work. As always, the minute she sees her baby boy, her face just lights up with happiness. I always like to see that first look they give each other. I knew the husband missed her too. I tend to be a sucker for family things. We stayed home that night to let her rest up for the day out we had planned for the following day.

The next day came and the weather was beautiful. Clear skies, cool, and sunny…perfect. We started off with brunch in the hill country, went antique shopping in the area, did some wine tasting, and took a nature walk. I think my husband underestimates his mama; he was shocked at her carrying on, joking, and drinking wine. I think sometimes people need to be around others that can bring out a side of them they’re not use to letting out all the time. And I know I can be that person sometimes…ok…most of the time…WINE! The Gruene & New braunfuls, Texas area is so lovely…the Comal & Guadalupe River area in full view no matter where you are in this area. So the scenery was just an added bonus. We wrapped up the evening with the Christmas festivities at Sea World.

The following day I had to work, which was a good thing because it gave the husband and his mama some alone time. He took her to Lackland Airforce Base to show her around where he reports to duty. Afterwards they met me at the shop; I surprised her with one of my facial treatments. It was her very first one and I’m going to make sure it’s not her last. She enjoyed the pampering and said her skin felt 10 years younger. From there we took her to eat sushi, was it was her first time experiencing Japanese cuisine. She was really excited to try something new and it was fun watching her be a sport. To walk off all that yummy food, we went downtown. It was so packed with tourists and locals all there to see the Christmas lights on the Riverwalk, it was the second day of the lights being on, so you can only imagine the crowd. Another fun night it was, laughing and enjoying the sites. You have to take a barge ride on the Riverwalk if you ever visit San Antonio…it’s a must! We ended the evening at a dueling piano bar called Howl at the Moon. This place is always packed! Lucky us my brother is an entertainer there so we waltzed right in! I have to admit, I was a bit worried how she would handle a place like that, but she enjoyed watching everyone act like fools, liked some of the songs they played, and we introduced her to Blue Hawaiians! Haha It was a fun night, we stayed there longer than I expected that’s for sure.

Our last morning with her on the way to the airport, I was a bit sad; I don’t think I was ready for her leave. Just seeing her enjoy herself and having fun was so rewarding to me. I do these kinds of things for my parents all the time because that’s how I was raised, so being able to treat them now as an adult makes me feel like I am paying them back for being such good parents. Being able to treat my mother in law to a weekend like this was priceless. She is such a hard working woman and I thought she deserved a weekend that was just about her. She hugged my husband and I many times, thanked us, and told us how much she appreciated everything. I could tell she wasn’t really ready to go home either. When we drove home from the airport, I couldn’t help but feel joy in my heart. Being that my family and I are very outgoing, sometimes I take it for granted that we are able to do all those things. Seeing someone enjoy themselves, just letting go of everyday hustle and bustle, and having plain ol good fun made me feel like I really did a good deed. So I end this blog with this…take time to treat your family (especially your parents) to special outings, experiences, and adventures once in a while. Especially those that don’t ever do things like that for themselves. We only have one family and aside from all the fun those outings bring, it also makes for good bonding. Cheers to having such a sweet Mother in law.
